The week in Tumblrs 7.8.11

Oh boy was this week a busy one.

On Monday, the actual 4th, Anthony and I flew home from South Carolina. We missed the holiday display of fireworks, but since they are in abundance in SC, I'm sure we'll get a show in at least once before the summer is over.

Ah, the glamour of operating a small theatre company. Wishbone's artistic director, John Mark, and I attended a healthy (3.5 hours!!!) lecture this week on the rules and regulations of achieving 501-C3 (tax exempt) status. It was run by a wonderful organization called Lawyers for the Creative Arts and was actually quite fascinating. You should see the stack of paperwork we've got to fill out!

Speaking of Wishbone, I've been working on a new identity for it which necessitates delving into the pantone world.

Oh, scooters. They seem like such the perfect mode of city transportation and it is fun to flirt with the idea of owning one (in this particular daydream flirtation, the harsh reality of only being able to actually use a scooter 5 months out of the year doesn't figure. Because that's what daydreams are for, dammit). Anthony found a place north of the city that restores vintage Vespas so we went to check it out. They were cute, we drooled and then took our scooter-less selves back home and continued to dream.

Fireworks and food

Fourth of July was pretty spectacular this year.

I hate overpacking. I spent so much time on the road my first few years at work that I got pretty adept at fitting an entire week's worth of clothes into a backpack and since that time will do just about anything to avoid a) checking a bag and b) having to worry about overhead bin space. And I like clothes. A lot. But I like just carrying one small bag through the airport even more.

All this to say that I've started keeping a stash of summer clothes at the lake so that I can pop a pair of shorts and a t-shirt in my purse and head on my way. This hat is actually Anthony's, but I've adopted it as it provides the perfect amount of shade for reading in the sun.

My dad is a huge fan of Mark Twain, so I got him the first volume of MT's musings for his birthday.

I spent the weekend nursing this particular addiction. Actually, Megan and my cousin are both immersed in the series as well, so there was some pretty extreme geekage going on. Winter is Coming!

We went on an excursion to Wal Mart and lo and behold they carrie Essie! Megan and I splurged on some summer colors.

Mom likes to fatten us up when we come home. This was by our side the entire weekend. When not eating candy, we stuffed our faces with the following items:

 A gigantic pork shoulder.

Some incredible homemade bread.

Pre-dinner drinky drinks.

Steak and mushrooms.

Sinfully delicious mini cinnamon rolls.

The most decadent chocolate cake known to man.

All in all it was a wonderful weekend filled with family and food and oh-so-much fun.

It's almost the weekend! Time for Drinks!

To celebrate the fact that summer seems to have finally arrived in Chicago, we decided to splurge on some fancy lemonade and then Anthony got one of his brilliant ideas to use it as the base for a cocktail. The following is a visual guide to recreating:

And of course, no happy hour would be complete without:

So there you have it - a perfectly refreshing, slightly tangy lemonade cocktail with a little cooling infusion of mint. I like everything really tart, so mine used a LOT of lemon, but the best thing about this drink is that everything can be adjusted according to your tastes.

On that celebratory note, I will be heading to South Carolina for the 4th so there will be lots of pictures up next week!

Happy Independence Day!

Sometimes I Make Dinner

Let's talk cooking.

I'm still in a stranger-in-a-strange-land kind of feeling towards the whole art of making dinner from scratch. Traveling frequently for work for a few years got me in pretty close relationship with my freezer and microwave. Those two appliances and me had a pretty good thing going on. One would keep my collection of frozen dinners nice and cold while the other would warm them up. In return, I would allow them to remain plugged in and pay the electric bill each month. It was nice. Simple. Symbiotic.

But I have been trying lately to make real dinners for myself on the occasions that Anthony is not home. It's not started out easy. When I look in the fridge and try to figure out what the heck kind of flavors go with what the heck other kind of flavors, more often than not I start feeling like I've shown up for a class on test day and haven't studied. Panic starts to set in and then I wig out and eat cereal for the second meal in one day.

Bit by bit I'm getting braver, but the going is slow. Thank goodness for cereal and pasta because that means I won't starve along the way.

The other night I pulled it together and accomplished the following: (baby steps remember)

Step 1: Start with a drink to bolster confidence in one's cooking prowess. You can do this. More bourbon first? Okay.

Step 2: Cut brussel sprouts in half while managing to keep one's fingers still intact despite the bourbon intake that has occurred. Slow and steady. Twenty minutes later (or however long it takes you to carefully cut brussel sprouts despite your fear of really sharp blades severing off your fin- oh, you aren't afraid of knives and got this task done while I was whining? GOOD FOR YOU.) Assemble in straight rows on a pan (because organization of cruciferous vegetables is certain to enhance their flavor), douse with olive oil, stress that the olive oil distribution is not even, get over yourself (myself), add salt and pepper, and broil the crap out of them for fifteen minutes or so. Grate some parmesan cheese on top and DEVOUR.

But not before....

Step 3: Pick up the frighteningly sharp knife again and decimate the following items: one red bell pepper, one green bell pepper and a turkey sausage. While cutting up the turkey sausage try not to think about the following things: how it was made, where it was made and what things it may or may not resemble.

Distract that slightly disturbing chain of thought by heating up oil in a skillet. Do not think about house fires or grease fires while doing so. Try to remember what puts out a grease fire. Baking soda? Baking powder? Oh, it's 9 PM already? Time to get cracking. Cook the turkey sausage, cook up some bulgar wheat in the beloved microwave and then! Then! The fun begins.

Throw everything in a big bowl, crumble some feta, add some balsamic and lemon juice and then spend another twenty minutes carefully arranging everything in cute dishes, lighting them just right and photographing them for the blog post you will someday write if laziness doesn't set in first. By the time everything has reached approximate room temperature and the photo shoot is done, sit down to eat and reflect that cooking isn't really that hard after all.

Week in Tumblrs - recap edition

I'm a little delayed on the Week in Tumblr posts, so here's a little catch up of the past few weeks:

I love seeing peonies in the grocery store. The colors are so perfectly spring-like and they just seem like generally happy flowers. Even the name 'peony' just sounds happy. You have to smile when you say it...it just has that effect. On me at least.

I have been ogling scooters a little bit. It all started when I wanted a bike...and then began looking around at the less labor intensive transport options. Plus the colors! Are so beautiful! Not that I will be justifying a several thousand dollar purchase instead of a few hundred dollar one anytime soon, but it is fun to dream.

After monthsandmonths of lusting over a certain striped dress on Madewell, I decided to take the plunge and am ridiculously happy about it. Do not ask me how many times I wore it around my apartment before taking it out into the world because I will not tell you.

Game of Thrones ended this Sunday as did (sadly) our weekly viewing party dinners. We decided to end the season with some overindulgence and feasted on a 10 pound chuck roast, the most decadent cornbread ever seen on planet earth (as in contained bacon, dripping from aforementioned bacon and cubes of pepper jack cheese) and my first stab at a cherry pie. The only thing missing were horns of ale.

Poppin!

As a kid, when summer began drawing to a close there was a little sense of melancholy...questions began filling my mind like did I really maximize my time playing outside and building forts and swimming for hours on end at the pool? Did I get through enough Babysitter's Club books to really feel as though I have taken advantage of every spare moment of freedom? And then the school supply lists would arrive and from that moment on it was full-on excitement for the coming year because I knew I would get to start the new school season with a BRAND NEW TRAPPER KEEPER.

Oh, the bliss.

Apparently, I still hadn't gotten my fill of office supplies when I got into college, because I spent the next three summers and Christmas holidays working at Staples. Now, I will tell you that there is a special kind of hell that involves restocking the pen aisle at 1 AM after a full day of dealing with customers who may not be mentally equipped to deal with the stress of back-to-school shopping (especially when the power went out and we were forced to ring up 200+ items BY HAND ohtheagony). But even though it was college, and even though I was well past the age of Lisa Frank pencil cases, it was still fun to go through the store on my last day and get my own school supplies...as uninspiring as they may have been.

All of this to say, there is now a company that has taken the boring vinyl binders and ballpoint pens of the adult office supply world and infused some life and good design into them. I first heard about Poppin this week and may have spent quite a lot a totally normal amount of time perusing the site and making lists of things I want picking out a few things I need (so what if I already have a laptop case...maybe I need a backup. That's cute. And has yellow straps). Some of my favorite things are above.

Color Study: stuff on my dresser edition

Do you ever have one of those moments where you look around your apartment and spot things that are all in the same color palette?

No?

Just me?

Okay.

Well, anyway, I had one of those moments this morning resulting in the above photograph. Items involved are: the book I started over a year ago and then needed Robert and Meryl visuals to help with some of the major plot points, new mascara (bought purely for the simple packaging), an industrial spring currently serving time as my business card holder and some awesomely cheap jewelry.

ALVIN

It's been quiet here.

The past two weeks have been a little overwhelming. My grandfather passed away last Wednesday. While it was hard to lose him, I am thankful for the memories I have and that he was a part of my life for so long.

After the service, my grandmother unearthed boxes of photographs from their lives. This is one of the best of the two of them and it means a lot to me to have a copy of it.

I will miss you Grandpa.
